Worldwide IT spending has rebounded strongly from the Great Recession, as many businesses take advantage of the general economic recovery to catch up with overdue spending on critical hardware infrastructure. Market data from International Data Corporation (IDC) shows capital spending on PCs, servers, storage, and network equipment soaring in recent quarters, producing strong year-over-year growth comparisons with the lowest period of the recession. Meanwhile, consumer spending on smartphones has continued to accelerate.

According to a recent eMarketer revised forecast of Internet ad spending, US spending on online advertisements will increase nearly 11% to $25.1 billion, up from $22.7 billion. eMarketer’s previous prediction in December 2009 was for 5.5% growth. A stronger-than-expected search and banner market, along with the rush among advertisers for greater accountability in the still-soft economy, led to the revision.

The rate of global software piracy climbed to 43 percent in 2009, a two-percentage-point increase from 2008 fueled in large part by expanding PC sales in emerging markets, according to the seventh annual Business Software Alliance/IDC Global Software Piracy Study.
“Software theft exceeded $51 billion in commercial value in 2009. The public and private sectors need to join forces to more effectively combat an epidemic that stifles innovation and impairs economies on a global scale,” said BSA President and CEO Robert Holleyman.

A total of 234 million people age 13 and older in the U.S. used mobile devices by the end of Q4 2009.
According to a new survey recently announced by Ruder Finn, Americans are spending an average of 2.7 hours on the mobile Internet, connecting socially, managing their personal finances, and even as a means for advocacy. 91% of mobile phone users go online to socialize compared to only 79% of traditional desktop users. Mobile phone users are 1.6 times more likely to manage finances compared to traditional desktop users. Mobile phone users are 1.4 times more likely than traditional desktop users to rally support for a cause.

The IDG TechNetwork, a vertical advertising network established by International Data Group in 2008, increased its revenue by more than 300% in the company’s fiscal first quarter ended Dec. 31, compared with the year-earlier period.
The network includes 275 b-to-b and consumer tech sites, including ECT News Network, GigaOm Network and Linux Open Source. Advertisers include AT&T, CA, Cisco, Dell, IBM, Microsoft and Symantec.
“The IDG TechNetwork has grown into a multimillion-dollar business in less than two years because it brings together the global credibility of IDG, a wide selection of high quality tech sites, and segmented audiences that see ads that are most appropriate for their interests,” IDG TechNetwork CEO Peter Longo said in a statement.

U.S. unique monthly visitors to Facebook grew 96.5 percent between January 2009 and January 2010, with over half the U.S. online population visiting during the course of the month, according to data from comScore.
By contrast, visits to MySpace dipped 23.5 percent in that period, with 27.7 percent of users accessing the site during the month of January. That represents a loss of almost a quarter of its unique audience over the past 12 months.

The ABC Fas-Fax report numbers released earlier this week show single-copy newsstand sales are down 4.34%, an improvement from the dramatic 23% decrease reported for the same period last year.
The report measures circulation of the 76 reporting titles for July-December 2009 versus the same period in 2008.
Biggest gains for the period are for Hello! Canada which increased its paid subscriptions by 65.9 % and Canadian Business which saw its single-copy sales go up 78.0%
